Australia Has Some Really Good Scenic Roads

For the self drive holiday maker Australia has more than just boring highways. Here’s a sample of what Down Under has to offer.

Bloomfield Track:

You’ll need a off road vehicle for this road, but it’s definately worth it… running from the town of Cape Tribulation to Cooktown, it meanders through the tropical rainforests of North Queensland, where the coastlines are majestic and the wildlife interesting and unique. Fuel is pretty cheap in this part of Oz and the route is a reasonable size – so it’s a handy little number if you’re touching down at Cairns Airport.

Explorer’s Trail:

This drive is ideal if you’re arriving at Adelaide Airport in the South or Darwin Airport in the North. Running between the two cities, the Explorer’s highway slices right through the centre of Australia, taking in numerous varying landscapes. You’ll meander through the rolling green countryside of Adelaide, the vineyards of South Australia and the vast red sand dunes of the Simpson Desert, before finishing at the tip of the Northern Territory, where the dark green tropical forests of Darwin provide an impressive finish to your journey.

Adelaide to Melbourne Highway:

This scenic drive is great if you’re landing at either Adelaide Airport or Melbourne International. Starting in the rolling green hills of Adelaide, this route wanders through the beautiful Murraylands, the South Australian wine region, the Grampians and finally Melbourne. You’ll pass through the resort region and the beautiful goldfields on your way through to Melbourne, and you can top off your adventure by enjoying the trendy atmosphere of the Victorian capital.

The Great Ocean Road:

If you’re planning a Holiday in Melbourne then you should definitely check out the Great Ocean Road. Taking in the sights of the Victorian coast line in Australia’s temperate south east, this incredible road goes from Torquay to Warrnambool and is the most famous of all Australias Scenic drives. Meandering through the thick rainforests of the Otway Ranges, the famous Twelve Apostles landmark and the rugged cliffs, isolated coves and world famous waveriding beaches along the coast, it really is an experience to behold… and you don’t even need a 4WD vehicle to experience it.
